Ambati Rayudu is an Indian cricketer who is best known for his batting prowess and versatility in the sport. Born on September 23, 1985, in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, Rayudu is a right-handed middle-order batsman who has represented India in various formats of the game.

Ambati Rayudu Early Life and Cricketing Journey

Ambati Rayudu’s father, Sambasiva Rao, was a clerk in the Indian Railways, and his mother, Vijayalakshmi, was a homemaker.

Rayudu was introduced to cricket at a young age by his elder brother, who was a cricketer himself. Rayudu’s talent was soon noticed by the local cricket coaches, and he began his formal training at the age of 10.

Rayudu started playing in local tournaments and age-group cricket, where he quickly made a name for himself as a talented batsman.

His breakthrough came in the 2002 Under-19 World Cup, where he was the leading run-scorer for India and helped them reach the final.

Ambati Rayudu Domestic Career

After his impressive performance in the Under-19 World Cup, Rayudu was soon picked up by the Hyderabad Ranji Trophy team. He made his debut for Hyderabad in the 2002-03 season and quickly established himself as one of their key batsmen.

In the 2006-07 season, Rayudu scored his maiden first-class century, which helped Hyderabad qualify for the knockout stages of the Ranji Trophy.

In 2008, Rayudu was signed up by the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Mumbai Indians, where he played under the captaincy of Sachin Tendulkar.

Rayudu’s performances in the IPL caught the attention of the national selectors, and he was soon included in the Indian team for the 2012 tour of Zimbabwe.

International Career

Ambati Rayudu made his debut for India in the ODI series against Zimbabwe in 2013. He scored a half-century on debut and helped India win the series. Rayudu’s versatility as a batsman, coupled with his ability to keep wickets, made him a valuable asset to the Indian team.

Rayudu’s breakthrough performance came in the 2014 Asia Cup, where he scored two half-centuries and helped India reach the final. He followed it up with another half-century in the final, which India won against Bangladesh.

Rayudu’s consistent performances in the Asia Cup earned him a place in India’s squad for the 2014 ICC World T20 in Bangladesh.

Despite his impressive performances in the limited-overs format, Rayudu had to wait until 2015 to make his Test debut. He played his first Test against Australia in Adelaide and scored 37 and 6 in the two innings.

Rayudu’s Test career, however, was short-lived, as he was dropped from the squad after just one Test.

Controversies

Ambati Rayudu’s career was marred by a few controversies, the most notable of which was his public spat with former India captain, MS Dhoni.

In 2019, Rayudu was left out of India’s World Cup squad, which led to him tweeting that he had “just ordered a set of 3D glasses to watch the World Cup”.

Dhoni, who was then the team’s wicketkeeper, responded by saying that Rayudu should focus on playing cricket instead of tweeting. Rayudu later announced his retirement from all forms of cricket.

Ambati Rayudu is married to Chennupalli Vidya, and the couple has one child together. Rayudu is known for his love for cars and has a collection of luxury vehicles.
